Summary
These reports suggest that patients with femoral shaft fractures who had intramedullary reaming of the femoral canal prior to nail insertion had higher rates of union and faster time to union compared to patients who had unreamed nailing. However, there are other factors that must be considered when using the treatment of intramedullary reaming prior to nail insertion. These include the longer operative time, higher quantity of blood loss, and possible pulmonary complications associated with the reamed procedure.
