Introduction Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide and the most frequent malignancy of the gastrointestinal tract. In Brazil, CRC presents a significant burden of morbidity and mortality, ranking third in incidence, with approximately 40,000 new cases diagnosed annually.

Objective To describe the number of reported cases and the demographic profile of colorectal cancer in Brazil between 2013 and 2024.

Methods This is a descriptive, retrospective, population-based epidemiological study conducted in July 2024. It utilized secondary data recorded in the Oncology Panel available on the website of the Department of Informatics of the Brazilian Unified Health System (DATASUS). The sample included all reported cases of colorectal cancer in Brazil between January 2013 and December 2024.

Results During the study period, CRC incidence varied by region, with the Southeast leading, followed by the South and Northeast regions. In 2024, 5,441 new cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed, with the Southeast region accounting for the highest absolute number of cases (2,717 cases, 49.93%), followed by the South (1,665 cases, 30.6%), Northeast (652 cases, 12.05%), Midwest (292 cases, 5.36%), and North (115 cases, 2.11%). Diagnosis was most common in individuals over 50 years of age, ranging from 77.3% in the North to 84.28% in the Southeast in 2024. Between 2013 and 2024, a total of 182,847 cases of colorectal cancer were reported in Brazil. The Southeast region was the most affected, with 89,798 cases (49.11%), followed by the South (49,535 cases, 27.09%) and Northeast (27,485 cases, 15.03%). The Midwest and North regions had fewer cases, with 11,572 (6.32%) and 4,457 (2.43%), respectively. Similarly, diagnosis was predominantly observed in individuals over 50 years of age, with the Southeast showing 80.76% of cases in this age group.

Conclusion This study highlights the high prevalence of colorectal cancer during the analyzed period, particularly among individuals over 50 years old across all regions of Brazil, with a predominance in the Southeast. These findings underscore the importance of raising awareness about screening exams, such as colonoscopies, especially for this age group, to ensure early detection, reduce underreporting, and achieve better clinical outcomes.
