APP FOR GUIDING MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS ON THE USE OF COLONOSCOPY IN COLORECTAL CANCER SCREENING: COLONOSCOPY GUIDE
Authors
Colorectal Cancer has become an increasing public health issue in Brazil. Data from the National Cancer Institute shows approximately 45,630 new cases in 2023. It is the second most common type of malignant neoplasm in both men and women in the country, excluding skin cancers. Its mortality and cure rates are directly related to its detection at earlier stages. Screening can be done in different ways, with fecal occult blood tests and colonoscopy being the preferred modalities. Colonoscopy is an endoscopic method capable of providing early diagnosis and also removing precursor lesions of colorectal cancer (adenomatous polyps). It is, therefore, the diagnostic method of choice. Thus, its indications and appropriate time for repetition are essential for correct screening and prevention. However, its major limitation is high costs and still limited availability, so its accessibility to the population must be carefully considered and aligned with current literature data. After conducting research with primary care physicians in the municipality of Três Rios, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, through questionnaires and review of medical records, we observed a high rate of errors in the indications for colonoscopy, especially regarding follow-up after polypectomies. As a result, we developed an application (Colonoscopy Guide) available for the Android platform (and eventually iOS) that provides a simple manual for doctors, with indications for the exam, preparation guidelines, and, mainly, the recommended time for repetition, based on the results found. Among its features, it automatically provides, after the physician enters the patient’s exam data, the recommended time for repetition. The project was developed as part of the master’s thesis of one of the authors and applied after its completion, with good results and acceptance by the professionals in the region. We hope to mitigate healthcare system costs and increase the effectiveness of colorectal cancer screening.
