Introduction Malignant colon neoplasm is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality related to cancer worldwide. In Goiás, as in the rest of Brazil, the impact of this disease on the healthcare system is significant, reflected in a high number of hospitalizations. Understanding the epidemiology of this pathology is crucial to guide public health policies, develop preventive strategies, and improve the clinical management of patients in the region.

Objective To qualitatively and quantitatively analyze hospitalizations due to malignant colon neoplasm in Goiás between 2008 and 2023.

Methods This is a retrospective observational study based on the DATASUS database, using the Health Data Science Platform (PCDaS), developed by the Institute for Communication and Scientific and Technological Information in Health at FIOCRUZ, which allowed access to enriched data from the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS) and the analysis of hospitalizations for malignant colon neoplasm (ICD-10 C18) in Goiás between 2008 and 2023. A segmented regression (joinpoint) was performed to determine the trend in hospitalization rates.

Results There were 11,192 hospitalizations between 2008 and 2023 with a primary diagnosis of C18. The predominant sex in the sample was male, with 5,779 (51.63%) patients. The most frequent age group was between 50 and 69 years, with 5,260 (47.0%) patients. The main surgical procedures performed were hemicolectomy (1,832) and appendectomy (1,670). Among the procedures performed during hospitalizations, 6,893 (61.75%) were of moderate complexity. The majority of hospitalizations were urgent, with 8,137 (72.7%) cases. Furthermore, 1,183 hospitalizations resulted in death, of which 1,064 were urgent cases. The statistics showed an increasing trend in hospitalizations.

Conclusion The high rate of urgent hospitalizations and the significant number of deaths, particularly among these hospitalizations, highlight the severity of the disease and the need for more effective interventions. The increasing trend in hospitalizations suggests a rise in the incidence or detection of malignant colon neoplasm, underscoring the importance of prevention policies and early diagnosis. These findings provide an important foundation for the formulation of public health strategies aimed at reducing morbidity and mortality associated with malignant colon neoplasm in Goiás.
