Sujit Chatterjee, B Sc., D.H.M.S., H.D.July 24, 1959 - January 9, 2024

Sujit Chatterjee was a Mumbai, India, homeopath and author who graduated, in 1983, from the Gujarat Homoeopathic Medical College (Savli, Gujarat, India). He practiced and taught homeopathy in Mumbai for over 25 years where, as a colleague of Rajan Sankaran, he served as a core faculty member in Sankaran's organization, “The Other Song.” Sujit organized and taught at the Annual Classical Homeopathic Course for foreign students in Mumbai as well as for other organizations, e.g., West Coast Homeopathic Society (WCHS, a west Canadian homeopathic organization founded in 1995). He was especially adept at treating cancer.

“His contribution to the field of homeopathic research and studies included conducting provings of several new remedies, i.e., Chocolate, Camphora, Pipal (Ficus religiosa), Banyan (Ficus indica), and Uranium nitricum. He also acted as the master prover for a recent proving of Dysprosium conducted at “The Other Song.” Sujit is also known for his unique knowledge of converting patient's understanding into rubrics and his brilliant practical use of the LM potency.”

The British journal, New Homeopath (43:1, Spring 2024, p. 42) published his obituary.

“Dr. Sujit Chatterjee has been a vital part of my journey for decades, serving as a trustee of Homeopathic Research and Charities, a core team member of The Other Song, and a fellow traveler in the fascinating realm of Homeopathy. His unwavering dedication, sincerity, tireless efforts, and pure intentions have been a source of inspiration to all of us in Mumbai. Sujit's simplicity, humility, honesty, and compassion reflect the qualities of a truly remarkable human being. I fondly recall the study meetings hosted at his home, accompanied by the delightful snacks lovingly prepared by his wife, Kumkum. His presence is deeply missed.” –Dr Rajan

In an email communication of January 29, 2025, Dr. Gaurang Gaikwad offered these comments:

“Doctor Sujit Chatterjee was a very special person, and what impressed me the most was his humbleness, his desire to bring everyone together with much simplicity in his approach.”

“As a homeopath, I was very fortunate to spend almost a decade learning from his cases and many other people's cases. When I was working under his influence in The Other Song [Rajan Sankaran's group], the thing that impressed me the most was his simplicity. I remember this especially because, when I did a year of studying in Calcutta I found this amazing homeopath, Dr Sunirmal Sarkar in Calcutta, who till then was not much known to the west and to different homeopaths in Mumbai. I worked with doctor Sunirmal Sarkar for a year. I noted down all his very interesting remedies and rare remedies, Indian drugs that he uses. I tried to write a book on it called in memory of him. I returned to Mumbai, and I spoke about his work to Doctor Sankaran and Doctor Sujit Chatterjee. Chatterjee's humility showed as he asked, ‘Where clinic.’ Where he practiced in Kolkata? I will personally go in his clinic.”

“Next year, he went to Calcutta and was sitting in his personal clinic. Doctor Sarkar was quite amazed and after that, almost every year, he went there. Not just that, he learned these rare remedies, which I was working on and which I wrote a book on. He started using them in his practice. It was fascinating that at his stage of clinical experience to be open, to learn from another homeopath and use that.”

“The other thing which was very fascinating for me about Doctor Sujit Chatterjee is, he did a lot of provings of more well-known remedies like Uranium nitricum. Lot of his proving information that he has given about Uranium nitricum, I am using in my practice. For example, classically, it's only known for diabetes, but when he did a lot of proving of Uranium nitricum, he found the theme of explosion. He found the idea that it's beyond Aurum metallicum.”

“He told us to use it more often for palliative care, for post chemotherapeutic, or after radiations. Along with Radium bromide, Cobaltum, he found Uranium nitricum. And later on, he also came up with the idea of using the entire Actinide series for chemo side effects. I do believe that he was one of the pioneers in this approach. And he used to use lot of different approaches together. Truly, a lot of my work is definitely inspired by him along with so many of my other teachers.”

“He did provings of Ficus, Ocimum sanctum and many Indian remedies. He is one of the very few homeopaths who has done provings of old Ayurvedic remedies and found lot of patterns there. Although previously, we used Ocimum sanctum for cold and cough or Ficus for bleeding, he did proving and found all the patterns of the plant families in it. He was really a contemporary homeopath, bringing approaches together.”

“I also remember a human side to him because as a very young assistant, as a young trainee, I used to go to different doctors and study and learn from their cases. He probably was one of the only ones who, after the case that he took, would get a box of sandwiches and offer it from his box to all of us. I remember so fondly eating those sandwiches that his wife would make. This gesture was so special and actually somehow really defined him as a person.”

“Out of so many homeopaths who are so senior, so well known, maybe more popular, lot of people who worked with him remember him as a warm soul who was there for them and who had a humane side to him, who we could sit with, eat food together, and even sometimes, give their opinions about his prescription. I will give you an example: I remember he did a case, and I was sitting with him, it was a very interesting case of particular pathology. He found a particular remedy, I tried to analyze the case, and then I suggested him another remedy. I said, I feel this could be the remedy. Now this is very interesting that after I suggested the remedy and I am just in 1 year assisting or seeing cases with him, he listened to me and said, I think your suggestion is very interesting! He changed his prescription and gave what I said. Now this has nothing to do with my knowledge because I was just a probably a beginner at that moment, but he had the kind of personality or the character to go by a young doctor's suggestion and go with that particular prescription. This is very rare, and I have worked with some really great homeopaths, and I don't remember anyone else who has done anything close to this. This, again, is another incident that really defined him as a person!”
