HD-MetaPET: Development of a long axial field-of-view (LAFOV) PET/MRI system with dedicated local PET detectors for spatial resolution enhancement
Authors
Ziel/Aim Recently, long axial field-of-view (LAFOV) PET systems have been introduced, increasing the sensitivity of PET systems by at least one order of magnitude. To date, these systems are exclusively combined with CT. The HD-MetaPET project aims to build the first LAFOV PET/MRI enabling superior soft-tissue contrast and the advantages of simultaneous imaging such as motion correction. In addition, HD-MetaPET develops methods to locally boost the spatial resolution of the PET image to the range of 1 mm to detect smallest lesions or changes in the tissue.
Methodik/Methods HD-MetaPET integrates a clinical MRI with a stationary LAFOV PET ring enhanced with dedicated local detectors. The PET electronics is based on the Hyperion III-PET-platform [1]. The local PET detectors provide a highly increased spatial resolution in the range of 1 mm and can be freely placed within the imaging volume. Therefore, the PET spatial resolution is locally increased at these regions of particular interest. DOI-capabilities of the PET detectors at both the stationary ring and the local detectors ensure a homogenous spatial resolution over the whole field-of-view.
Ergebnisse/Results We present the current status of the HD-MetaPET project. Simulation studies of different concepts of the PET component were performed and motivated the design choices for the PET/MRI. The concept of local PET detectors was included in the simulations, proving the PET spatial resolution enhancement. Concepts and characterization of detector concepts for both the stationary and local PET detectors will be presented as well as MR-compatibility studies of the Hyperion III-PET-platform.
Schlussfolgerungen/Conclusions HD-MetaPET enables simultaneous and hybrid PET/MRI imaging with local enhancement of the PET spatial resolution.
