Metallhaltige Dentalwerkstoffe können durch Korrosion oder Abrieb eine permanente Metallexposition in der Mundhöhle bedingen. Die freigesetzten Ionen und Partikel fördern lokale Entzündungsgeschehen der betroffenen Schleimhäute, können jedoch in Abhängigkeit der Darmbarrierefunktion auch systemisch aufgenommen werden. Chronische Metallbelastungen steigern bereits im subtoxischen Konzentrationsbereich das Risiko für chronisch entzündliche Multisystemerkrankungen, wie z. B. Arteriosklerose, chronisch entzündliche Darmerkrankungen, depressive Symptomatiken und Neurodegeneration.
