Abstract

EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency) is an insufficient production of digestive juices in the pancreas. As a result of this insufficiency, initially a steatorrhea develops. Later on, the capacity to digest proteins and finally also carbohydrates decreases. The usual treatment with enzymes seems to be easy, but is not effective with a severe EPI. Why this is the case and how this can be counteracted, is presented in this article.
