This randomized trial compared bowel preparation using a diabetes-specific protocol (combination of education, blood glucose handling, dietary plan) with a conventional protocol (written instructions only) in patients with diabetes. Both groups received 4L split-dose laxative. Adequate bowel preparation was more common in the specific protocol group (93 %) than in the conventional group (80 %). A multifactorial approach in patients at increased risk of inadequate preparation might substantially improve the quality of bowel preparation before colonoscopy.
