The interventional radiologist's (IR's) armamentarium consists of an array of wires, each with a unique set of design properties and functional characteristics that make the instrument suitable for a particular procedure. Operators select wires based on personal preferences generated through experience; however, an understanding of general principles is paramount for both trainees and seasoned IRs, as device properties can guide procedural planning and intraprocedural troubleshooting.
