Abstract

Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a rare condition, and malignancies account for up to a quarter of cases. Malignant PVT is an advanced stage in the neoplastic process, which affects survival. In addition, portal venous obstruction can result in portal hypertension and associated complications. There are a few reports on the surgical and nonsurgical management of this condition. We herein aim to present an overview of these management options and discuss the factors affecting the outcomes after each. We will also discuss gaps in knowledge and the possible areas for future research.
