Multilevel Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion Combined with Posterior Stabilization in Lumbar Disc Disease - Prospective Analysis of Clinical and Functional Outcomes

Dear Editor,

We read the publication on “Multilevel Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion Combined with Posterior Stabilization in Lumbar Disc Disease - Prospective Analysis of Clinical and Functional Outcomes” with a great interest.[1] Moura et al.[1] noted that “Instrumented ALIF combined with posterior stabilization is a successful option for uni- and multilevel degenerative disc disease.” We would like to share ideas on this report on spinal surgery. In fact, as noted by Grabala et al.[2] any spinal manipulation for the correction of vertebral problems might be associated with complications. The risk of complications might increase due to several factors, including the basic physiology of the patients, such as body mass index.[3] The nature of the instrument and the direction of approach are also related to the occurrence of postoperational stability and complications.[4] Also, a complex procedure might also be associated with increased risk.[2] Those factors have to be considered before a definitive conclusion is reached regarding the technique.
