Dr. Fia Yi is a staff colon and rectal surgeon at San Antonio Military Medical Center and an assistant professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD. Fia was born in Tampa, FL, and received her dual degrees (Biology and Music) at Emory University, prior to completing her medical school at USUHS. She went on to perform her General Surgery Residency training at Wilford Hall Medical Center/University of Texas-San Antonio and completed her Colon and Rectal Surgery Residency training at the Georgia Colon and Rectal Clinic in Atlanta, Georgia. After spending a few years at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, NV, she returned to SAMMC, where she has stayed on as staff since 2014.

Fia is a busy clinical surgeon and emerging academician. She has written several peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and has been involved on national and local-regional society committees. She also serves as a reviewer for many peer-reviewed surgical journals including Diseases of the Colon and Rectum and Military Medicine.

She is also a member of our active duty armed services, currently as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force. She has deployed to combat during 2012–2013 to Bagram, Afghanistan, as well as in 2018 in Iraq. When not at work, she enjoys reading, cooking, and has gotten involved in the sport of Olympic Weightlifting. On a personal note, it has been great to watch her evolve as an excellent technical and robotic surgeon, academician, and leader within the military. She is a talented writer and educator and will be a leader in our society. On behalf of the readers and staff of Clinics in Colon and Rectal Surgery, I sincerely thank Dr. Yi for serving as a Guest Editor and for providing us with an incredible issue on a very difficult topic of anal intraepithelial neoplasia and anal neoplasms.
