A technique for the surgical repair of caudal peripheral detachment and longitudinal peripheral tears of the medial meniscus in dogs

Summary

Medial meniscal injuries are frequently encountered in dogs secondary to cranial cruciate ligament rupture. Treatment has been limited to partial or total meniscectomy, however removal of meniscal tissue inevitably results in degenerative change. This paper describes a modification of the “inside-out” technique used in human medicine for the repair of caudal peripheral detachment and longitudinal meniscal tears in the vascular zone. Horizontal mattress sutures are used to attach the meniscus to the caudal joint capsule. Six hundred and fifty-four meniscal injuries were found in 1126 stifle arthrotomies and 92 (14.4%) were considered suitable for surgical repair.
