Summary

Studies on the kinetics of calcium metabolism were carried out in 19 patients with extraosseous malignancies. Each subject was injected i.v. with 47Ca and followed by determining the time-course of plasma specific activity excreted in urine and faeces as well as the stable calcium excreted in urine. The kinetic analysis was based on a mammillary three-compartement open model. The values for the parameters of this system — size of each compartment, urinary and faecal excretion rates, and skeletal accretion rate — appeared normal and therefore can be used as control values for further studies. The analysis suggested that Compartment 3, about one-third of Compartment 1, and a small part of Compartment 2 consist of bone calcium. The remaining calcium in the exchangeable pool belongs to the soft tissues.
