Zusammenfassung

Wissenschaftliche Leistungen leben von der Originalität ihrer Urheber. Der Ver-such, sie zu quantifizieren, erscheint als Widerspruch in sich. Um so irritierender ist der Siegeszug des sogenannten Impact Factors, eines Konstrukts des amerikanischen Institute of Scientific Information (ISI), das den Anspruch stellt, über die Häufigkeit der Zitierung von – vom ISI erfaßten – Zeitschriften das Gewicht der in diesen publizierenden Wissenschaftler zu messen. Seit naturwissenschaftliche und medizinische Forschungseinrichtungen und Fakultäten dazu übergehen, den Impact Factor zur Grundlage für die Verteilung von Forschungsgeldern und zur Guillotine für wissenschaftliche Karrieren zu machen, schickt er sich an, die internationale Wissenschaftskultur zu verändern. Deshalb ist es an der Zeit, daß die Öffentlichkeit dieses Zeitgeistphänomen zur Kenntnis nimmt und sich mit seinen Folgen auseinandersetzt.

Résumé

Le travail scientifique vit de l’originalité de son auteur. Essayer de le quantifier semble être une contradiction en soi. Le succès triomphant du prétendu facteur d’impact est d’autant plus déconcertant que ce produit de l’Institut Américain d’Information Scientifique (ISI) exige de mesurer l’importance des savants qui publient un article dans ces revues par le biais de la fréquence de citation des revues – recensées par l’ISI. Depuis que les savants et les institutions de recherche médicale utilisent le facteur d’impact comme base pour l’attribution de fonds de recherche et comme guillotine pour les carrières scientifiques, celui-ci se dispose à modifier la culture scientifique internationale. Par conséquent, il est temps que le public prenne note de ce phénomène d’esprit du temps et qu’il réfléchisse à ses conséquences.

Summary

Scientific Achievement is a matter of creativity and originality of scientists. The attempt to quantify scientific achievement appears to be a paradox. Therefore the glorious career of the so called Impact Factor is an irritating fact. The Impact Factor is a construct of the American Institute of Science Information (ISI) which claims to measure the importance of scientific journals by counting citations in journals which are listed in Current Contents – and indirectly – to measure the importance of scientists who publish in these journals. Since scientific and medical research institutions employ the Impact Factor as a basis for allocating funds and promoting careers, the Impact Factor has begun to change international scientific culture.
