Journal of Wrist Surgery in 2018

In my Editorial for the fourth issue of the Journal in 2015, I had promised that we would aim to (1) deliver and maintain high quality of the published articles, (2) establish a smooth review process, (3) create a strong editorial board, and (4) work toward achieving an Impact Factor to the journal. In 2015, the Journal reported 104 submissions, and the number increased to 134 in 2016. The increase in the number of submissions has been accompanied by an enhancement in the quality of published articles. To invite more review style articles, I changed “Special Focus Section” that includes articles on specific topics to “Special Review,” thereby avoiding double publication. The Journal now has one “Special Review” article on topic of specific interest, such as “Kienböck's Disease,” “Wrist Anatomy,” and “Wrist Biomechanics.” To serve purposes (1) and (2), we have invited a number of qualified reviewers this summer. In 2018, the Journal will be expanding to five issues a year, followed by an increase to six in the year 2019. This shows a significant improvement in the article base and journal presence in the field.

This issue includes a Special Review article entitled “Palmer Midcarpal Instability: An Algorithm of Diagnosis and Surgical Management” by Dr. Pak-Cheong Ho. Palmer midcarpal instability is a rare condition that is considerably difficult to treat. Normally, patients undergo midcarpal fusion, such as “scaphocapitate fusion” or “lunocapitate fusion.” This review describes its diagnosis, arthroscopic treatment approach, and reconstruction of the sagged ulnar carpal rows using tendon graft. Additionally, this issue also features interesting wrist-related scientific articles on topics such as the dorsal wrist pain, thumb carpometacarpal problems, distal radius, and scapholunate dissociation, along with articles describing procedures and wrist and carpal anatomy.
