Abstract
Current mainstays of medical therapy for endometriosis preclude fertility or may have
unwanted side effects. Therefore, research has been underway to find alternatives
to current options which may be applied to future medical treatment. The focus of
this review is that of investigational hormonal and nonhormonal medical therapies
based on in vitro and in vivo animal models of endometriosis as well as in human endometrial and endometriotic
cells in vitro. Assessment of the safety and efficacy of such novel medical treatments have been,
and continue to be, necessary prior to clinical trials.
