The ivy leaf dry extract EA 575® (Prospan®) is an extensively examined herbal medicinal product which can rely on studies with more than 65.000 patients [1]. We here report on a recently conducted non-interventional study (NIS) which evaluated the efficacy and safety of the treatment of acute bronchitis in schoolchildren (6 – 12 years) with 5 different dosage forms containing EA 575® [2].

201 medical doctors participated in the NIS during the cold season of 2014/2015. The treatment of 1066 patients with EA 575® was assessed by an improvement of symptoms within the 7 day therapy, which was rated by the doctors and the patients using standardized questionnaires and patients' diaries. All symptoms assessed by the doctors (e.g. expectoration, dyspnea, auscultation, etc.) distinctly improved within the course of the 7 day therapy (approx. 50% on average). The bronchitis severity score showed a marked improvement of79.3%, in average, for all dosage forms. Subjectively perceived symptoms, e.g. cough intensity, chest pain, or sleep problems improved by 49.9% to 58.1%. Additionally, a high level of compliance and a very good tolerability could be shown.

The results of this NIS confirm the efficacy of all 5 investigated medicines containing EA 575® in the treatment of schoolchildren suffering from acute bronchitis. Interestingly, there was no discernible relative difference between patients receiving concomitant therapy (e.g. antibiotics and/or analgetics) and those who did not. Therefore, the prescription of EA 575® containing preparations can already be sufficient in some cases.
