    Dear colleagues,

I am delighted to introduce you to the very first issue of Ultrasound International Open (UIO), a new journal on interdisciplinary ultrasound in medicine and biology!

The ever increasing number of submissions to Ultraschall in der Medizin/European Journal of Ultrasound (UiM/EJU) has encouraged Thieme Publishers to start a sister journal, Ultrasound International Open. As an Open Access journal, UIO complies with the same strict scientific standards as UiM/EJU, with a comparable peer review process. Apart from this, UIO is an independent journal with its own Editorial Board, website, and submission system.

UIO will publish original contributions reporting on new developments from a variety of disciplines on the diagnostic and therapeutic applications of ultrasound. Also considered for publication are technical papers focusing on physiology as well as on the interaction between ultrasound and biological systems. We invite and encourage submissions from all regions, as tremendous ideas and research work are being generated from all corners of the world. “Open Access” stands for free access to scientific literature and related content via the Internet. An article published under the gold Open Access model gives every user the possibility and permission free of charge to read and to reuse, download, archive, share, link and print this document. Costs associated with scientific publishing (editorial processes, submission systems, production editing, typesetting, hosting on servers, longterm storage, marketing etc.) are covered by an “article publication charge” (APC). An increasing number of (public) funding agencies request that results of their projects are made freely available to the public. Given the increasing importance of Open Access publications and in order to meet with mandates and policies, we identified the need of a high quality Open Access journal applying the same scientific standards as UiM/EJU.

A team of international ultrasound experts has enthusiastically agreed to join the Editorial Board: Deepak G. Bedi (USA), Vito Cantisani (Italy), Caroline Ewertsen (Denmark), Kai-Sven Heling (Germany), Adrian Lim (United Kingdom), Guntram Lock (Germany), Sonila Pashaj, Albania and myself. We are looking forward to developing this journal for the international ultrasound community as a truly innovative platform for the exchange of research and clinical experiences.

This first issue includes 4 original articles and 3 case reports and we thank all the authors for their interest in this journal and the reviewers for their invaluable efforts during the peer-review process. We look forward to receiving your submissions which will contribute to the success of the journal!

I hope you enjoy your reading!
On behalf of the Editorial Board,

    Adrian Săftoiu
    Editor, Ultrasound International Open
