About half of the (German) population has used homeopathic medicines. The proportion of users increased from 53% in 2009 to 60% till date. These data are the results of a representative survey conducted by the Allensbach Institute in May and June 2014. Spread over Germany, a total of 1,503 persons aged 16 years and over were interviewed.

“The overall conclusion is that homeopathic medicines are becoming increasingly important. The circle of users has grown significantly,” said Dr. Barbara Steinhoff, Director of Herbal and Homeopathic Medicines in the Federal Association of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (BAH).

This study also shows that especially women use homeopathic remedies; 73% of female respondents said they use these drugs, and the proportion of men is 48%. In West Germany 64% use homeopathic remedies, and in the east of the country 44%.

The users were also asked for which complaints they have taken homeopathic remedies successfully; 56% mentioned colds and influenza, 30% strengthening the immune system and 24% insect bites/sunburn. Twenty-two percent said that they have successfully taken homeopathic remedies for headache, followed by digestive disorders (21%) as well as insomnia and gastric complaints (both 19%).

The vast majority is convinced that homeopathic medicines have no side effects. About half agrees with the statements that homoeopathic remedies are particularly well tolerated and also suitable for children.
