Innerhalb des 1. Lebensjahres eines Pferdes treten physiologischerweise Schwankungen in den Konzentrationen verschiedener Laborparameter auf. Zunächst muss sich der gesamte Organismus während und nach der Geburt an eine völlig neue Umweltsituation anpassen, was vor allem im Bereich der Hämatologie zu Änderungen der „Normalwerte“ führt. Schließlich erreichen diese Parameter nach und nach im Verlauf der ersten 12 Lebensmonate die für adulte Pferde gültigen Referenzbereiche.
