Abstract
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast represents an established diagnostic tool in breast imaging besides mammography and sonography.
It is the most sensitive and a specific method to detect invasive and pre-invasive breast lesions. The classic applied sequences on 1.5 or 3T scanners are T1 and T2 weighted. I.v. contrast material application is mandatory. The introduction of new sequence techniques like diffusion weighted imaging and spectroscopy broaden the diagnostic potential of breast MRI. Indications for breast MRI include amongst others early cancer detection in high risk women, to answer particular questions pre-operatively and to exclude recurrent cancer in follow-up exams.
