Abstract

Chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases often cause substantial impairment of activity and participation. Apart from prescribed therapy, patients can derive noticeable benefits from regular sports and physical activity in everyday life. However, the lifestyle of these patients is often characterized by physical inactivity. Socio-demographic, health-related and environmental factors that influence physical activity were the focus only of few systematic analyses. This article presents the results of international studies with regard to cross-sectional association and longitudinal predictors of physical activity in chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases, especially in regard to patient’s reported facilitators and barriers. Indications of potential risk groups of physical inactivity and possibilities to promote physical activity are discussed.
