Infektionen mit Equinen Herpesviren (EHV) sind weitverbreitet und können schwerwiegende klinische Probleme erzeugen. Vor allem EHV-1 wird durch Spätaborte und Equine Herpes Myeloenzephalopathie (EHM) als bedeutendes Pathogen des Pferdes eingeordnet. In den letzten Jahren wurden große Fortschritte im Verständnis der EHV-1-Epidemiologie und Pathogenese gemacht, viele Wissenslücken müssen jedoch noch geschlossen werden.
