Ausreichende Schmerzlinderung bei onkologischen Patientinnen ist in vielen Fällen mit simplen Mitteln möglich. Die Orientierung am WHO-Stufenschema zur Tumorschmerztherapie, ergänzt mit spezifischen Maßnahmen, die an den zugrunde liegenden Mechanismen ausgerichtet sind, führt zu sinnvollen Behandlungsschemata. Eine spezialisierte palliativmedizinische und schmerztherapeutische Beratung kann häufig sehr hilfreich sein.
