Pertussis ist eine weltweit vorkommende, hochinfektiöse Erkrankung. Die Kindersterblichkeit
durch Pertussis ist in vielen Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern immer noch besorgniserregend
hoch. Es ist eine impfpräventable Erkrankung, die nur von Mensch zu Mensch übertragen
wird. Eine Eradikation durch konsequente Impfung und gute nationale Impfprogramme
ist also theoretisch möglich. Ausbrüche kommen aber immer wieder auch in Industrienationen
mit guten Impfquoten vor. Jugendliche und Erwachsene sind hier am häufigsten betroffen.
Im Rahmen der Reiseberatung ist deshalb das Schließen von Impflücken wichtig, um dem
Reisenden einen größtmöglichen Schutz gegen diese Erkrankung zu bieten.
Pertussis is a worldwide and highly communicable disease. Despite it being vaccine
preventable, in many emerging and developing countries child mortality caused by pertussis
is still alarmingly high. Transmission is airborne and only possible from human to
human. Therefore world-wide eradication of pertussis through vaccination and good
national vaccination programmes is theoretically possible. Even in industrialised
nations with known satisfying vaccinations rates, outbreaks do occur. Here, adolescents
and adults are often the most affected age groups. In order to optimise protection
against pertussis in travelers pretravel consultation is important and this opportunity
should be used by the clinician to close vaccination gaps.
