Beim TANTALUS™/DIAMOND™-System handelt es sich um eine Technik der Magenstimulation, welche eine neue Therapieoption bei Typ-2-Diabetes und Adipositas darstellt. Nach laparoskopischer Implantation wird mittels Elektroden und Impulsgeber die Magenwand durch elektrische Impulse stimuliert und die Kontraktion der Magenmuskulatur verstärkt. In der Folge soll es zur vermehrten Ausschüttung gastrointestinaler Hormone und einem früher einsetzenden Sättigungsgefühl kommen. Bislang wird das TANTALUS™/DIAMOND™-System lediglich im Rahmen klinischer Studien eingesetzt. Erste Ergebnisse von Studien mit einer Dauer von 6 Monaten ergaben eine Senkung der HbA1c-Werte von etwa 1 % und eine Gewichtsabnahme von etwa 5 kg. Ebenso konnten positive Effekte auf Blutdruck und Lipidprofil erzielt werden.

The TANTALUS™/DIAMOND™ system provides a technique for stomach stimulation and thus represents a new therapeutic option for type 2 diabetes and obesity. After laparoscopic implantation, the stomach wall is stimulated by electrical impulses from electrodes and an impulse generator. This serves to reinforce contractions of the stomach musculature which should then result in an increased secretion of gastrointestinal hormones and an earlier onset of a feeling of satiation. To date the TANTALUS™/DIAMOND™ system has only been employed within the framework of clinical studies. First trials over a period of 6 months led to a reduction of the HbA1c level by about 1 % and a weight loss of about 5 kg. In addition, positive effects on blood pressure and lipid profile were observed.
