Publication History

Publication Date:
03 August 2011 (online)

One way of judging the academic impact of a research manuscript is by citation statistics. The Science Citation Index supplies vast amounts of data on each publication that is listed and these can be analysed by anyone with a subscription to the ISI Web of Knowledge or similar.

To have one’s research cited by over 100 authors during the 20 years after publication is a notable accomplishment. Therefore, in this editorial, I provided a list of the 21 manuscripts that have been published in the International Journal of Sports Medicine since 1990 and which have been subsequently cited one hundred times or more ([Table 1]). These IJSM ‘centurions’ should be justly proud of their work.

There is an obvious relationship between how long ago a manuscript was published and the number of times it has been cited. In this respect, the manuscripts by McLaughlin et al. (2001) and Borghouts et al. (2000) should be especially commended for attracting over 100 citations even though they were published after the year 2000.

We thank all authors who submit to IJSM and we believe that good research will be deservedly acknowledged via the journal, which now has an impact factor of 2.38. Moreover, IJSM has shown the biggest increase in ranking from 2009–2010 out of all the sport-related journals.
