To Be or Not to Be

Summary

This case is a very good example of cure from the constitutional simillimum. The patient's physical pathology was so extreme that my prescription was based entirely on her inner disturbance. She wanted to disappear from living. This patient did not want to live in her own life. She was not here. She was empty; there was not a person in her psyche. She had dissociated. She was fearful of existing and felt inadequate to make decisions for herself. The only part of her that is expressive is her skin.

1 The inner disturbance is the core of our case-
taking, and it is always reflective of what is unusual or disturbing to your (the homeopath's) inner sensibilities. The homeopath must identify what is disproportionate to reality in their patient's story Hahnemann said in aphorism 153 of The Organon, that in the search for a homeopathic specific remedy we should concentrate on “the more striking, singular, uncommon and peculiar signs and symptoms of the case”.

3 “Dissociative disorder” is a far more complex disorder in which the patient creates multiple personalities.

4 The peculiar rubrics which contain only one remedy are exquisite gems which I treasure because they are the more striking, singular, uncommon and peculiar signs and symptoms of that particular remedy only. [Aphorism 153 The Organon.] The Delusion rubrics that contain only one remedy are indicative of the conflicting psychological delusions in each constitutional remedy.

5 Muriaticum acidum is personified in the character of Hamlet in the play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, written by William Shakespeare. The profile that identifies Hamlet as Muriaticum acidum is his inability to act. Hamlet is perceived as a man tormented by his own indecisive inertia, which eventually drives him into insanity and depression. I repertorised Hamlet as mirroring the psychological inertia of the destructive elements of acidum and muriaticum within the remedy picture of Muriaticum acidum. Hamlet pontificates, “To be or not to be”; this is the remedy profile of Muriaticum acidum.
