Sexuelle Störungen können unterschiedlicher Genese sein, wobei eine eindeutige Ursache aufgrund der interagierenden morbogenen, sozialen und pharmakogenen Komponenten meist schwer zu identifizieren ist.

Sexuelle Störungen können einen weitreichenden Einfluss auf Lebensqualität, Partnerschaft und Compliance haben, wobei letztere sich wieder auf die Behandlungsqualität auswirkt.

Kann ein eindeutiger Zusammenhang mit den eingenommenen Medikamenten nachgewiesen werden und leidet der Patient unter den sexuellen Störungen, so liegt ein unbedingter Handlungsbedarf vor. Dabei ist die Kenntnis der grundlegenden physiologischen Zusammenhänge von Bedeutung. Als therapeutische Alternativen stehen Abwarten, Drug Holidays, eine Dosisanpassung, ein Wechsel zu einer nebenwirkungsärmeren Medikation, augmentative Therapien und paartherapeutische Hilfen zur Verfügung.
