Die einzige Technik, die bis zum Jahre 2001 eine komplette Beurteilung des gesamten Dünndarms erlaubte, war die intraoperative Endoskopie – ein Verfahren, das jedoch mit einer nicht unerheblichen Morbidität und Letalität assoziiert ist. Inzwischen hat die Entwicklung der Kapselendoskopie und der Doppelballon–Enteroskopie das Feld der Dünndarmdiagnostik revolutioniert, da diese beiden neuen Methoden die letzte Lücke der endoskopischen Dünndarmdiagnostik schließen konnten. Daraus haben sich zahlreiche neue therapeutische Möglichkeiten ergeben. Mittlerweile existieren über 2 000 Publikationen zum Thema Dünndarmdiagnostik, die heute Bestandteil der klinischen Routinediagnostik ist.
Up to 2001, the examination of the whole small bowel was possible only by means of intraoperative endoscopy, but this method is known to be associated with a substantial mortality and morbidity. The new methods capsule endoscopy and double–balloon enteroscopy have revolutionized the field of small bowel diagnostics. In the meantime, more than 2 000 reports on small bowel diagnostics have been published in literature. The new methods have become part of daily clinical practice.
