Summary

Evidence from one large cohort (N = 169,145) provides the primary basis for the conclusions in this report as six smaller cohorts may have had less statistical power to study the rare event of second hip fracture.
The incidence rate of second hip fracture was 3.9 per 100 patient-years (rates from the six smaller cohort studies ranged from 2.3–3.9 per 100 patient-years). Female sex, older age, and alcoholism were found to be strong prognostic factors for second hip fracture. Any prior fracture, living alone, and greater income were associated with a slight increase in the risk of second hip fracture. Comorbid disease was not a significant risk factor.
