Summary

The bark and leaves of Mangifera indica were found to contain 9.33 % and 11.73 % tannins respectively. The chlorophyll–free leaves were extracted with methanol. Fractional extraction of the methanol extract with ethyl ether followed by ethyl acetate then took place. Hydrolysis of the ether fraction, followed by adsorption chromatography led to the separation of gallic acid. From the ethyl acetate fraction, a 1,3,6,7–tetrahydroxyxanthone–?–glucoside „mangiferin” was separated.
