Zusammenfassung

Krebs wird dank des medizinischen und pharmakologischen Fortschritts zunehmend zu einer chronischen Erkrankung. Damit verbunden sind neue gesellschaftliche und gesundheitsökonomische Herausforderungen, die in der Literatur bisher kaum thematisiert worden sind. Dazu gehört u. a. das Engagement, aber auch die Belastung der Patientinnen und Patienten sowie der betreuenden Angehörigen, Freunde und Bekannten, u. a. auch bis zu chronisch prekär werdenden Finanzlagen. Dieser sogenannte «caregiver burden» wird (noch) zu wenig berücksichtigt, auch wenn die Preise für neue Medikamente bestimmt werden. Die Autoren unternehmen den Versuch einer Annäherung an die Problematik am Beispiel von Brustkrebs.

Abstract

Thanks to advances in medical and pharmacological research, cancer is increasingly evolving into a chronic condition. This development brings with it new societal and health economic challenges that have so far received little attention in literature. Among these are not only the commitment required from patients, but also the burden placed on them and on their caring relatives, friends, and acquaintances – sometimes leading to persistently precarious financial situations. This so-called “caregiver burden” is still insufficiently considered, even when determining the prices of new medications. The authors examine the caregiver burden through a case study of breast cancer in Switzerland.
