Neil A. Busis, MD, FAAN, and Benjamin R. Kummer, MD, FAAN

The Guest Editors of this issue of Seminars in Neurology are Drs. Benjamin R. Kummer and Neil A. Busis.
Dr. Kummer is Associate Professor of Neurology and AI & Human Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he also serves as Director of Clinical Informatics in Neurology. He received his BA from the University of Pennsylvania in Biology and Economics, followed by his MD from Drexel University College of Medicine. His Neurology residency was completed at Columbia University, followed by Vascular Neurology and Clinical Informatics fellowships. He served as Vice Chair of the Telehealth Subcommittee at the American Academy of Neurology from 2021 to 2025, and is Vice Chair of the Quality Informatics Subcommittee for the 2025–2027 term. He is triple board certified in neurology, vascular neurology, and clinical informatics. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles on the use of informatics tools and AI in neurology, with a particular focus on inpatient neurology, epilepsy, and cerebrovascular diseases. He has an impressive track record of investigation and publication in the field of medical information, including on socioeconomic biases in medical decision-making, as well as machine learning and natural language processing. He has clearly become a leader in the field, producing highly impactful work!
Neil A. Busis, MD, FAAN, is Associate Chair for Technology and Innovation and Director of the Telehealth Division in the Department of Neurology at NYU Langone Health, and Clinical Professor of Neurology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He established and currently directs the teleneurology program at NYU and previously developed and directed the general teleneurology program at UPMC in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Busis serves as a member of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Medical Economics and Practice Committee and Vice-Chair of the AAN Wellness Subcommittee. He represents the AAN as primary advisor to the American Medical Association (AMA)-convened CPT Editorial Panel and is a member of the AMA Digital Medicine Coding Committee (DMCC), where he serves as the DMCC liaison to the AI Payment Framework Working Group within the AMA Digital Medicine Payment Advisory Group (DMPAG). Previously, Dr. Busis served on the AAN Board of Directors, chaired its Medical Economics and Management Committee, and participated extensively on various AAN committees, subcommittees, and workgroups. He also represents the AAN on the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-being and Resilience, having served on its Steering Committee and co-chaired three working groups. Additionally, he was a committee member for the NAM consensus study, “Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout: A Systems Approach to Professional Well-Being.” Dr. Busis's clinical interests include general neurology, teleneurology, and clinical neurophysiology. His research focuses on telemedicine and digital health technology, clinician well-being and burnout, medical coding, documentation and billing, and quality measurement and value in healthcare.
We greatly appreciate the efforts of Drs. Kummer and Busis, as well as all of the contributing authors, for their insightful contributions in this issue of Seminars in Neurology. We realize that this is a different topic than usually covered in Seminars in Neurology, but one that is timely and more important than ever given advances in technology and regulations, so we hope you find this issue helpful and informative. I personally learned a great deal from it, and it will definitely change my practice in many positive ways! I would like to personally thank Drs. Kummer and Busis for their commitment to making this a superb issue—Neil and Ben, you were amazing Guest Editors, such a pleasure to work with!
