EFSUMB at ECR 2025
This year’s European Congress of Radiology took place in Vienna from 26 February to 2 March and had a record high number of attendants from all over the world. The topic of the joint session between EFSUMB and the European Society of Radiology (ESR) was “AI assisted ultrasound”. The chair of the ESR ultrasound subcommittee Professor Thomas Fischer (Berlin, DE) introduced the session and chaired it together with EFSUMB President Caroline Ewertsen (Copenhagen, DK). Four distinguished speakers each gave a talk on different topics involving AI assisted ultrasound.
President Elect of EFSUMB, Vito Cantisani, explained how different vendors have incorporated automatic detection of thyroid nodules in their systems and how it may help the person doing the scan to classify the lesions. Studies have shown that the assistance is more helpful for the less trained examinators than for the skilled.
Dr. Giovanna Ferraioli very nicely explained how liver fat may be quantified and presented the results of the available literature. Professor Chris de Korte outlined different methods of AI assisted ultrasound, including detection of aortic aneurism from a standard ultrasound sweep, which may be helpful in underserved areas of the world, for instance. The session was finalized by Post-Doc Thomas van den Heuvel who showed some interesting results about how automatic evaluation of standard sweeps of infant hips in primary care may detect hip dysplasia.
Overall, the session was very well attended and outlined many different novelties – also for the future.
