Prof. Dr. Andrew Schally, who almost reached the age of 100, has passed away. He was a pioneer in the field of endocrinology and metabolism. His discovery, together with Prof. Roger Guillemin and Prof. Samuel McCann, of the hypothalamic releasing hormones, has profoundly shaped our understanding of the regulatory circuits and feedback mechanisms in modern endocrinology. This breakthrough has revolutionized our approach to diagnosing and treating endocrine and endocrine-related diseases. Beyond endocrinology and metabolism, he has pioneered the modern therapy of prostate cancer. In addition to discovering hypothalamic releasing hormones, he led an outstanding team of protein and peptide chemists to develop numerous agonists and antagonists, allowing us to define and understand the crucial role of central releasing hormones in almost all key metabolic processes in the healthy organisms and in disease.
