Therefore, in 2014 EFSUMB Executive Bureau decided to start a new project to develop
and publish the first guidelines ever on gastrointestinal ultrasound (GIUS). Over
20 European experts were invited to take part in a Task Force Group (TFG) to establish
the new guidelines. The TFG have met physically on several UEGWs and contributed extensively
to a post-graduate course on GIUS in Gargnano, Italy in 2016.
For each recommendation in the papers, levels of evidence (LoE) and grades of recommendation
(GoR) were included to evaluate the clinical role in various applications. These were
generated according to the Oxford centre for evidence-based medicine criteria (http://www.cebm.net/oxford-centre-evidencebased-medicine-levels-evidence-march-2009/).
Since many of the themes in these guidelines have not been subjected to systematic
studies these recommendations often have a level of evidence 4 or 5, the latter being
expert opinion. Accordingly, this document also includes the level of consensus of
the members in the GIUS task force group. The manuscript and voting was partly finalized
by e-mail communication and by applying a web-based software by Clinical Guideline
Services (Clinical Guideline Services (guideline-service.de). Degree of consensus
was graded as follows: Strong consensus = > 95 %, broad consensus = 95–76 %, majority
consensus 75–50 % and dissent < 50 %.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my deepest appreciations to all members
of the GIUS Task Force Group who with great endurance have contributed over the last
7 years to accomplish this important mission.
