Andreas Drolz et al. Risk factors associated with bleeding after prophylactic endoscopic variceal ligation in cirrhosis.

In 787 nonemergency endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) procedures performed in 444 patients with liver cirrhosis, serum bilirubin levels and size of varices, rather than standard coagulation tests, were associated with upper gastrointestinal bleeding after ligation. This calls for future studies evaluating novel strategies to prevent acute bleeding after EVL.
