Abstract
Psychological and psychiatric crisis situations belong to the most frequent physicianʼs
emergencies. Psychiatric emergencies can be related to only few syndromes, i.e. agitation,
delirium, acute suicidal tendency, stupor or consciousness disorder. Procedures for
medical clearing in psychiatric emergencies have to consider the actual situation,
locality, and the individual disturbance patterns. About it, the personal safety cannot
be emphasized too strongly. The proposed procedure is disorder-specific, that concludes
the communicative skills of emergency staff being the most important tool of primary
crisis intervention. Diagnostic summaries and helpful strategies are described in
different emergency settings, illustrated by vivid examples. Emergency medication
often can be limited to only few psychopharmacological agents such as lorazepam and
haloperidol.
