Abstract

The aim of the investigation was to update the evidence of effectiveness of preparations from Prunus cerasus by considering study quality and the amount of active principle investigated. A review in PubMed and an additional hand-search identified 19 randomised double-blind studies for inclusion. Data extraction and classification of the evidence of effectiveness was carried out as previously described.

Obviously, all 19 studies investigated Montmorency cherry products. The amount of anthocyanins in the daily dosage varied from “not-declared” to around 500 mg/d (HPLC method). The 4 studies with a confirmatory study design differed in their outcome measures. Three exploratory studies did not support the positive results of three confirmatory studies. Two thirds of the studies with poor study quality showed superiority of the Montmorency products over placebo. The evidence of effectiveness was classified as “moderate”. Future dose-finding-studies should clarify the optimum daily supply of the active principle for each outcome measure. Similarly confirmatory studies should define the effect sizes. Long-term studies should exclude undesirable effects before Montmorency cherry products are recommended by experts in sports medicine to accelerate regeneration after sports activities.
