Die Prognose für Patienten mit Lungenkarzinom ist im Allgemeinen immer noch ungünstig. Lungenkrebs-Screening in einer definierten Risikogruppe ist aber machbar und reduziert die Lungenkrebssterblichkeit deutlich, stellte Prof. Felix Herth, Heidelberg, auf einer Pressekonferenz auf dem Pneumologenkongress 2019 fest. Inzwischen gibt es auch gute Ansätze, die zu hohe Zahl falsch positiver Befunde zu reduzieren. Untersuchungen bezüglich der Kosteneffektivität stehen allerdings noch aus. Im Falle einer Implementierung bedarf es in Deutschland einer qualitätskontrollierten Struktur, um eine Überdiagnostik zu vermeiden, so der Pneumologe.
