ABSTRACT

Malaria is a dangerous infectious disease killing more than 400 000 people every year. When considering the increasing number of parasites with resistance against available medication, the development of a vaccine seems crucial. However, despite intensive research in this field, no vaccination with large scale feasibility has been established. Of particular interest is the infection with P. falciparum as it yields numerous complications and therefore poses an acute threat to life. This article gives an overview of the disease with particular focus on the single-celled parasite‘s remarkable life cycle and cell-biological characteristics as well as its interaction with the immune system.
