Abstract

An insufficient dietary availability of neuroprotective nutrients plays an important role in the pathogenesis of pain. Therefore, pain diagnostics should always take into consideration the supply with vitamins and neuroprotective nutrients too. Neuroprotective substances like vitamin D can provide a useful support for pharmacological pain therapy. In the case of musculoskeletal pain of differing etiology, a deficiency of vitamin D (25(OH)D: < 20ng/ml) should be balanced under medical supervision (target value-25(OH)D: 40–60ng/ml). The quality of life and the burden of pain can be significantly improved with the help of vitamin D.
