Abstract
In a patient with myelomeningocele (MMC) and hydrocephalus, hydromyelia can be treated
with endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV). A child with lumbar MMC, Chiari malformation
type II and hydrocephalus was initially treated with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt.
Hydromyelia involving the entire spinal cord was present. At the age of five years,
shunt dysfunction was treated with an ETV and the ventriculoperitoneal shunt was removed.
After ETV, the hydromyelia regressed in the following year. In patients with MMC,
ETV seems to be a possible treatment for both hydrocephalus and hydromyelia.
