Significance

Platencin was isolated from a strain of Streptomyces platensis. Due to its novel mechanism of an action, platensin may offer a treatment for drug-resistant bacterial infections. It exhibits micromolar activity against many gram-positive pathogens, including methycillin and vancomycin resistant strains. The first enantioselective synthesis is presented.
