Abstract

The chemical composition of the berries of three Vismia species is reported. The structure of vismin was established by chemical and spectroscopic methods and by its thermal rearrangement to anthrones. The biogenetic significance of the finding in the plants of both vismin and deacetylvismione A, as probable precursors of ferruginins and vismiones respectively, is underlined. The one-step conversion of deacetylvismione A to vismione B supports this hypothesis.
