Abstract

Two new pigments having naphthaquinone structure were isolated from the roots of Alkanna tinctoria Tausch. The UV, IR, NMR and Mass spectra were recorded and the compounds were characterized as 5,8-dihydroxy-2-(1'-isovaleryl-oxy-4'-methylpent-3'-enyl)-1,4-naphthaquinone (alkannin isovalerate) and 5,8-dihydroxy-2-(l '-methylcrotonoyl-oxy-4 '-methylpent-3 -enyl)-1,4-naphthaquinone (alkannin angelate).
