Abstract

Enteral nutrition support offers multisystem benefits to the acutely or chronically ill patient who is unable to meet their nutritional needs orally. Enteral support efficiently and effectively stimulates the normal function of the GI tract as a secretory, absorptive, and immunological organ. Enteral support and access offers a vehicle for supplementing micronutrients and delivering other medical therapies. Quality patient outcomes are achieved by knowledgeably assessing patients and managing their nutrition support as a priority in their total medical care.
